Find | Options

These options are on the Project Commander | Find | Options notebook page.

Approximate Search

# Errors Enter a number of allowable errors, or discrepancies, for Approximate searches. Type in a number or click on the up-down arrows. For most purposes, you should enter 1 or 2 here. If you enter a large number, your Approximate search will find text that is much different from what you are trying to find.

Maximum length of Find As you change the # Errors, the number labeled “Maximum length of Find,” will change. The latter number is the maximum length of text that you can enter for a Find operation. If you enter too much text in Find in the Main Window, you will get an error message. Reduce the size of your text in Find or reduce the number of Approximate Errors here.

Restrict Results For speed or brevity, you may wish to restrict what is shown in Results. These options override any other options for Results that might contradict them.

Counts only Show only the counts of folders and files with found words or expressions. Show no other information. This is useful when you want to see how many files contain particular text.

Files only Show only the names of files containing found words or expressions. Show no other information such as lines or columns.

When replacing, confirm Choose how often you are asked to confirm replacements during replace operations. Click one of these choices:

Every replacement Confirm every single replacement in every file.

Only once for each file Confirm only the first replacement in a file. Other replacements in the same file, if any, will be made without further confirmation.

Only at start of Replace Confirm only that a replace operation may begin. No replacement in any file will be confirmed.

Never (not recommended) Do not confirm anything. This is not the way to live comfortably with computers.

Backup Folder Duplicates When files are sent to the Backup Folder during replace operations, other files of the same names, duplicates, may be there. Click on one of the following choices to control what happens to the duplicate files.

Rename “copy0000 filename” Leave the duplicate in the Backup Folder and rename it by prefixing its name with “copy0000”. “0000” will be a number that gives the duplicate a unique new name. “filename” will be the duplicate’s file name before renaming.

Delete duplicates Delete duplicates encountered in the Backup Folder. WARNING: Deletions are permanent. Deleted files are not sent to the Recycle Bin. You can NOT recover the files.

Move to Recycle Bin Send the duplicates to the Recycle Bin, where you can recover them if you need to.

Original Files, No Backup During replace operations, the original files may have no Backup Folder for one of two causes. Either you did not enter a name for a Backup Folder (see below) or your Backup Folder is included in the Folder(s) you designated for the Replace operation. Click one of the following choices to control what happens to original files when you have no Backup Folder, or your Backup Folder is included in Folder(s).

Rename “copy0000 filename” Leave the original where it was found and rename it by prefixing its name with “copy0000”. “0000” will be a number that gives the original file a unique new name. “filename” will be the original file’s name before renaming.

Delete original files Delete original files after altered files, containing replacements, are created. WARNING: Deletions are permanent. Deleted files are not sent to the Recycle Bin. You can NOT recover the files.

Move to Recycle Bin Send the original files to the Recycle Bin, where you can recover them if you need to.

Retrieve Files from Backup Folder Retrieve backup files that were created during replace operations. See Retrieve Files Dialog.

Backup Folder Enter the name of a folder where the program can place backup files during replace operations. The backup files are the original files, before replacements. Enter a folder’s name by typing it in, or by selecting it from the drop-down list you get by clicking the down arrow, or by using the folder browser you get by clicking on the Browse button beside the Backup Folder entry. For help on retrieving files, see Retrieve Files Dialog. For information on how files are named when placed in the Backup Folder, see Backup Folder File Names.
